OPTIMUS ISE (Integrated Surgical Environment) is a highly specialized concept for how a hospital operating room should function. This project/design was designed in collaboration with numerous product and industrial designers to create an operating room that will have no obstructions for the surgical team and can be the first (truly) sterile OR. Freyer Architects designed the entire room to make the table the center and focal point. The medical gasses are now housed in floor pads that retract to disappear so that no hoses traverse the room. The trash receptacles are within the wall to eliminate tripping hazards. The lighting concept is taken from the theater and incorporates “shadow cancellation” technology, which means that the lights are focused on a single area and are not a single point source, but rather multiple points that can still light the patient even while the surgical team is working. Everything in this room is controlled by a laptop computer that is the heart of the Optimus ISE. The computer can control everything from patient information to lighting to medical gasses and room sterilization.
